"my name is wenbin mao. i'm a post-doc indr. wei sun, teacher of mechanics lab at georgia tech and my research is focused on cardiovascularsystem including heart valves and it's related to this. this research can help cliniciansto better understand the function energy of heart including the blood pumping in the heartand the causes of heart disease. i was born in china. i was growing in a neighborhoodof school because my mom is a teacher in school. i want to know how thing works and i wantto explore the unknowns. i first got interested in science in my high school. at that timephysics is one of my favorite classes because i was attracted by its power because manycomplex phenomena can be explained or predict. as a scientist, i think my research can benefitthe people.
and about six years ago, i came to u.s. topursue my phd in mechanical engineering at georgia tech and about one year ago i joinedthis lab after my graduation. the research area of this lab is very close to the clinicalapplications. i use both computational and experiment to study the functionality of theheart and to investigate the causes of diseasex. here this is a stimulator of human left ventricle.so we put two valves in here and you can see the valves open and closing to our system. for example, i use computational model tostudy the blood flows through the devices so i can examine the performance of this medicaldevice. so this will be helpful for the medical device companies to better design their products.the most [inaudible] when you like concentrated
on something and work on it for several weeksand you didn't how to solve it but finally, you get a solution to it and you feel a senseof accomplish. our group members are from different backgrounds.every time we have questions, we discuss together and we solve problems together. so my hopeis that my research can improve the treatment of cardiovascular disease, and the tools developedin our lab can improve the decision making process for clinicians and also help to savepeople's lives. i would tell the young people that this medical career has lots of opportunities. your research may save lives of thousandsof people."
